Hearing Loss is A Lonely Loss...You CAN Help!

The onset of hearing loss is typically insidious and fluctuating. Surprisingly often, neither the sufferer nor their family realize what is happening.

Watch for These Early Symptoms:

  • Apparent inattention or ignoring remarks
  • Inappropriate replies during conversation
  • Strained look on the face during conversation
  • Family members complain of indifference and withdrawal
  • Continually asking for repetition or complaints that you were hard to hear

For the sufferer the world seems to be receding: families grow impatient and colleagues increasingly leave them out. They are in a state of confusion. Even when they do identify their condition often they are terrified by the spectre of total deafness.

Show You Care and Set an Example in How to Care:

  • Speak normally, but a trifle more slowly
  • Check that your messages have been really understood
  • Cut out unnecessary background noise and check that all areas are well lit
  • Avoid restricting your conversation to terse, business-like utterances

Human beings are adaptable, they adjust to the situation in which they find themselves. They will adjust to hearing, too but not always in a manner acceptable to others or in their own best long-term interests.

Help to Make That Adjustment Positive:

  • Talk openly about the hearing loss - it is interesting
  • Have information about hearing loss readily available
  • Involve the family in the therapeutic process
  • Encourage consultation with both an ear specialist and a professional audiologist
  • Actively promote self-help
